Joscha Meiers

Joscha studied Pharmacy at the Saarland University in Saarbrücken, Germany. In his Master’s Thesis at the laboratory of Prof. Dr. Christian Ducho, he established a LC-MS-based assay to quantify the bacterial uptake of antibiotics. Afterwards, he joined the group Chemical Biology of Carbohydrates of Prof. Dr. Alexander Titz at the Helmholtz Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland where he received his Ph.D. His worked focused on the chemical synthesis and microbiological analysis of novel P. aeruginosa biofilm-targeted antibiotic conjugates. He joined the Balskus Laboratory as a postdoctoral fellow in May 2023. He is focused on finding new antimicrobial molecules from the human gut microbiome and understanding their role in colonization resistance. Additionally, he works on the characterization and inhibition of a bacterial acetyl-transferase as a novel antibiotic target. In his work, he uses High-Throughput Screening and techniques from the fields of Chemical Biology and Medicinal Chemistry.
