Antonio Tinoco Valencia
Antonio joined the Balskus group as a postdoctoral fellow in the fall of 2020 upon completing his Ph.D. with Prof. Rudi Fasan at the University of Rochester. At Rochester, Antonio focused on engineering hemoproteins as biocatalysts for the abiological asymmetric synthesis of chiral organofluorines and studied the basic mechanism of myoglobin-catalyzed carbene transfer reactions. In the Balskus group, Antonio is investigating the metabolism of sterols by microbial enzymes in the human gut microbiome while exploring the therapeutic potential of these microbes. Antonio is also an advocate for diversity and inclusion initiatives in higher education and enjoys cooking (and eating) with friends.
